Who is St. Thomas More

Saint Thomas More (1477–1535) was a distinguished lawyer, scholar, and statesman who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice and the defense of his Catholic faith. Educated at Oxford University, he became one of England’s most respected legal minds, rising to serve as Lord Chancellor under King Henry VIII. A devout Catholic, More was known for his unwavering commitment to moral integrity, standing firm in his beliefs even when they conflicted with the demands of the state.

His refusal to recognize Henry VIII’s break from the Catholic Church and the King’s claim as Supreme Head of the Church of England led to his imprisonment and execution in 1535. Before his death, he famously declared, “I die the King’s good servant, and God’s first.” More was canonized in 1935 and remains the patron saint of lawyers, judges, and public officials, embodying the principles of faith, ethics, and justice.

For Catholic legal professionals, More’s life serves as a powerful example of the harmonization of faith and law, emphasizing the importance of conscience, integrity, and the pursuit of truth. His legacy continues to inspire attorneys committed to upholding ethical principles, advocating for justice, and defending religious liberty in the legal profession.
