Red Mass
The St. Thomas More Society invites members of the legal and faith communities to the Annual Red Mass, a solemn tradition invoking the guidance of the Holy Spirit at the start of the judicial year.
Rooted in centuries of custom, the Red Mass takes its name from the red vestments worn by clergy—symbolizing the tongues of fire associated with the Holy Spirit. Originating in Europe, it has been celebrated in Paris, London, and Rome, and continues to mark the opening of the legal year in cities across the United States, including Washington, D.C., where members of the Supreme Court often attend.
Since its inception in the Diocese of Wilmington in 1988, the Red Mass has remained the central and most enduring event of the Society. This year’s Mass will be held at St. Peter’s Cathedral, continuing the Society’s tradition of reflection, unity, and prayer for those who serve in law and public life.
All are welcome.
